The western world has gravely misjudged the threat from ISIL, basically supporting them by bombing the syrian army every time it was about to annihilate ISIL.
The kurds did not ever make such a mistake, and the kurds took to their guns even in the face of tyrkish and saudi military support for ISIL.
By making their own panzers based upon civilian vehicles, and with the help of vigilantes from all over the world, the kurds managed to contain the ISIL onslaught without western aid.
